Increasing Your Productivity - Pulsing Beats The Marathon

Work hard. Work long. Work fast.

Nothing wrong with that, but...

Constantly working means you get less value for your hours worked.

Let me illustrate.

Imagine this. Feel it as you imagine it.

You are being chased.

You sprint.

Within seconds your lungs burst into flame. Running running, you must keep running.

Your heart beats like a drum solo on fast forward. Keep going, keep going!

Within seconds it beats so fast it's like a baritone buzzing deep in your chest...

You feel that?

Keep that feeling in your chest, arms, and legs.

Now imagine doing that for 2 hours straight.

2 days straight.

2 weeks straight.

Imagine doing it for for 20 years.

Three words. "Heart. A. Tack."

Getting the most out of your time does not mean sprinting a marathon.

You might say...

But I have to put out this fire and that fire. Business is speed. Speed is life. I have to get my goal. I have to run run run!

By all means run, but must you run constantly?

Here's another metaphor (thank you Art De Vany).

Native Americans used to run down their fleet of foot prey using a series of sprints and rests. They'd keep the animal from water sources and keep the animal from resting. Eventually the prey would become so exhausted that the hunters could bear down upon it easily.

This was pulsing: sprinting and resting, sprinting and resting.

What would have been the value of just sprinting at full speed after the deer?

Nothing. Value only comes from catching the deer. Since a man cannot flat out run faster than a deer...

What was the value of pulsing?

Everything. Because each sequence of sprinting and recovering moved the hunters toward success, catching their prey.

Rest has just as much value as the sprint. Resting is not wasting time.

You need to pulse your way to business goals. You need to pulse your way throughout your day.

Pulsing to your business goals means being active when you need to be active. It also means resting.

You rest so you can become fully active again.

Therefore, not resting, for example, not getting your mind off of your business, means that your mind is not able to be fully active. Just as you are weak after a marathon, so is your mind from constantly thinking business.

Would you bring a weak mind into your business to evaluate subtle opportunities?

Would you bring a weak mind into your business to make important decisions?

Would you bring a weak mind into your business to spot potential cash flow pitfalls?

Okay, fine. I see your point. But is there a way to pulse simply? I don't have time to learn some system.

Yep, it's really simple.

Pulsing in your business day means only focusing on the most important things and getting them done. Just not all at once.

It could mean 45 minutes of focused attention on something very valuable, then a 10 minute break. Then an hour on something else, and a 15 minute break. After that, 45 minutes of answering people's questions and issues, then a 10 minute break. You'll stay fresh and effective all day long.

Pulse. If life were meant to be a marathon... we'd never have been given the gift of sleep.
