There is no doubt that pay per click advertising offers one of the
best returns on investment of any advertising format available.
However, to be successful in ppc advertising, you have to follow a
few fundamental steps.
If you are going to handle your ppc campaigns yourself, you must have
a routine for checking the different cogs in the wheel. These will include:
Your keywords
Your competition
Your advert text
Your destination URL
Your cpc (cost per click) values
Your overall budget
If setting up ppc ads was a 5 minute job to set up an maintain, there
wouldn't be a whole host of pay per click management companies out there
charging for the service of taking over the campaigns for you.
So first of all, make sure that you have a clear picture of what you want
from your campaign. If you want to be at the top of search and content
site results, then you are going to have to pay a higher fee per click
than your nearest competitor. However, if you are happy to just get a share, then
you can substantially cut costs by being a little further down the ad list.
When you are clear on a position you'll be happy with, set up an account, write
the ads and test different cost per click values for each advert.
Make sure that you monitor each advert based on value and geographical
placement. If you are happy with the mix, then move on to the next advert.
One thing to do before anything else - you must control your budget from the start.
Set a figure (say £100 per month) for each campaign and see what value you get from
that investment. If you want more clicks, then you'll have to spend more money.
The beauty with ppc advertising is that you are always in control of what you spend and when your
ads will be displayed to the target audience you want.
When I plan to set up
advertising my website on google and other suppliers, I sit down and set a budget
before I write any ads. When I am sure what I want to spend, I then move on to looking at where my competition are in the ppc networks and search engine results.
When I have an understanding of what I want to do, then I write the ads and test them using variations of keywords that are relevant to my product and service. If I do this correctly, I can get a very high position for a low cost.
Remember, ppc advertising is all about getting the best value for the lowest price. If you spend some time
researching and setting up the campaigns, you should get some excellent returns.
